DOES BOTOX REALLY WORK FOR MIGRAINES?

A study of adults who suffered from chronic migraines were treated with shots of Botox and resulted in an improvement in the total number of days they had them. It was reported that they also had more “crystal-clear” pain free days each month with fewer days off work due to chronic migraines.

In another study, almost 50% of the people who undertook two rounds of Botox shots reported that the number of days they had a headache each month was cut in half. Continuing the treatment for five rounds increased this to about 70% of the people.

Even though the exact mechanism is still under investigation Doctors believe that Botox works due to blocking chemicals called neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from your brain. It acts like a road block in the pathway not allowing the chemicals to reach the nerve endings around your head and neck.

HOW IT WORKS

You will receive several shots of Botox around your head where you feel the effects of chronic migraine. This will be repeated every 12 weeks to dull and prevent chronic migraines.

The number of shots needed to see a positive result may vary on individual factors. The results take effect a few weeks after your first treatment.

SIDE EFFECTS

Generally speaking Botox for migraines is quite well tolerated and at the doses used to help relieve migraines the side effects are minimal if any.

You may experience a little headache after the treatment but this usually dissapears by the follwing day.
